Despair to Hope: the Lord who saves

Isaiah 40-55

Starting in February 2022, Redeemer began to walk through Isaiah 40-55. There is so much to learn from these 15 chapters and we just scraped the surface.

This series would work well to use in a core group (small same gender discipleship groups), and we wanted to make that easy to do. If you aren’t in a core group and want to be, get in touch!

In chapters 1-39 of Isaiah, we get glimpses into a new world that God is creating, a glimmer of hope in the distance. It hasn’t taken shape yet, but we know it’s there. It is precisely in chapters 40-55 that this fog is removed and we are brought close to the hope that was merely hinted at before.

Isaiah can be an intimidating and overwhelming book of the Bible to read. It’s for this very reason that people may overlook this fascinating prophecy from God. God is telling us many things in this book, but we will focus on a few for this series. We will be better off even if we understand just this fraction of a fraction. It might be helpful to get a general idea of the course heading before starting out. So just what are some of these themes?

The character of God
Most of these verses are about who God is and what He does. We find Him to have names like Redeemer or Holy One. God is presented in these chapters as worthy of our praise and our attention. This is a God who sees people in despair and raises them up to be with Him.

The Servant and the servants
Israel, God’s people, are supposed to be God’s servant, but they presently fail to live up to their calling. As we learn about Israel’s failure, we also learn about One who will come in complete obedience: the Servant, who is faithful and in whom the Lord delights. This Servant is Jesus, and He has the power to transform and restore all who have been unfaithful.

The exclusivity of God
It is clear in these chapters that there is no hope for anyone outside of the Lord. Idols (or anything we give ourselves to other than God) are as worthless as the material they were made out of, and they only lead to emptiness and death. God and God alone is our only hope to be rescued. Similarly, His Word, His way, is not just one option of being rescued, but the only option for anyone.

The restored people of God
Even in spite of grim circumstances, there remains some kind of way, provided by the Lord, where a new people can have a new orientation in life. Even in spite of our lackluster hearts, there is a God who transforms us and our desires. God is in the process of creating a people, not just individuals, that enjoy His glory and reflect it back out to others.
